The standard US recommendation is to plant garlic cloves 3 inches (7.5 cm) deep, 6 inches (15 cm) apart, in rows 10 inches (25 cm) apart. Chinese field growers set the same crop far closer — 5 to 15 cm (2–6 in) apart, in rows that narrow to 15 cm (6 in) — under as little as 2 cm (about 1 in) of soil. Both sets of numbers are real, and they are not measuring the same thing.
How deep to bury a clove, and how far apart to space it, are the two questions where beginners get whiplash. Below are the actual numbers on both sides, with the clip and the timestamp for every figure so you can check them yourself. One of them is a controlled trial; the others are growers describing what they do in their own ground. If the planting date is still open, start with when to plant garlic in fall — the date comes before the depth.
The US reference point: three inches deep, six inches apart
In a seven-method garlic trial filmed by Epic Gardening's Kevin Espiritu and his friend Jacques, the control bed used the standard extension-style recommendation 1:
- 3 inches (7.5 cm) deep
- 6 inches (15 cm) between cloves
- 10 inches (25 cm) between rows
Everything else was held constant, which is what makes the number worth quoting: the same Music garlic variety in every bed, cloves pre-sorted to identical size "because clove size does affect the final bulb", and compost added to all of them 1.
Then they changed one variable at a time — 1 inch (2.5 cm) deep and 6 inches (15 cm) deep at the same 6-inch spacing, and 3-inch (7.5 cm) and 9-inch (23 cm) spacing at the control's 3-inch depth 1.
What that trial has shown — so far
Read this part with care, because I'm going to be honest with you about the footage I'm working from: it is an in-season update plus one early dig-up, and the bulbs were not fully sized when they checked.
- The tight 3-inch spacing made no visible difference at that stage, because young plants simply weren't competing yet 1.
- The shallow 1-inch row leafed out first, developed a long neck, and grew slightly taller than the control 1.
- At the dig-up, the shallow single cloves looked noticeably bigger than the control's 1.
That is an observation, not a verdict. Anyone who tells you the trial proved shallow planting wins is reading a conclusion into a video that ends before the harvest.
How far apart to plant garlic: narrower rows, shallower cover
Chinese growers publish their spacing in centimetres and tie it to what they plan to harvest. No two of these sources agree — which is itself the useful information:
| Source | Row spacing | In-row spacing | Stated goal |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grower answering "how far apart" 2 | 18–19 cm (7 in) | 12–15 cm (5–6 in) | Growing for big bulbs |
| same grower, same clip | ~18 cm (7 in) | 10–12 cm (4–5 in) | just raising total yield |
| same grower, same clip | 17–18 cm (7 in) | 5–8 cm (2–3 in) | growing for greens or scapes 2 |
| Grower sizing rows for weeding and loosening 3 | 20–23 cm (8–9 in) | 8–12 cm (3–5 in) | big bulbs: "a single bulb reaches 60–90 g" 3 |
| October planting, home plot 4 | ~15 cm (6 in) | 5–8 cm (2–3 in) | close planting in a small bed |
| field planting 5 | 20–30 cm (8–12 in) | not stated | general |
| mechanised farm 6 | 45–60 cm (18–24 in) | 10–15 cm (4–6 in) | tractor and implement pass between rows |
| cut-greens plot 7 | — | 5 cm, 6–8 cm, 8–10 cm, by when they cut | baby garlic greens |
| pot growing 8 | — | at least 7 cm (3 in) | container; 2–3 cm of soil at the pot bottom first |
The mechanised-farm row comes from one partially transcribed farm clip and is read here as machine operation — the row width is set by the tractor and implement pass, not by the garlic 6.
On depth, the Chinese close-ups talk about soil left above the clove, not hole depth: roughly 1–2 cm of cover 9, and "about two centimetres of soil on top is right" 10.
Two patterns are worth stealing from that table:
- In-row distance follows the harvest. Bulbs need 12–15 cm per plant; greens and scapes can sit at 5–8 cm. The same bed width, different spacing, different crop.
- A 45–60 cm row is a machine decision, not a garlic decision. 6 Don't copy it into a raised bed you weed on your knees.
How deep to plant garlic: three inches of hole, or two centimetres of cover?
Three inches of hole versus two centimetres of cover differ by a factor of four, and the reason is that the two sides are not describing the same measurement. The Chinese description is explicit about theirs: the clove is pushed into the soil, and the depth is right when the tip of the clove barely shows through the soil you have just replaced 4. A folk rule travels with it — "set onions deep, set garlic shallow" — and the grower states plainly that garlic should not be planted deep 4.
So one number is anchored to the clove's tip and the soil surface above it, while the trial's "three inches" is quoted as planting depth without stating its basis 1. That makes the four-fold gap at least partly a difference in measuring, not in agronomy — and it explains why beginners following both recipes end up with two very different gardens.
What it does not settle is which depth is better in a hard-winter climate; our sources do not answer that, and we are not going to guess. The winter side of the question belongs to the fall planting calendar, which covers what the plant needs before the freeze.
Practical takeaway
- Copying the US recommendation: 3 in deep, 6 in between cloves, 10 in between rows.
- Copying intensive Chinese practice: a shallow cover of about 2 cm, 5–8 cm apart, in narrow 15–19 cm rows — and accept that you are trading space for hand work.
- Either way: sort your cloves by size before planting, because the biggest bulb in the row is mostly decided by the clove you started with 1.
- For the rest of the season — timing, mulching, harvest — see the grow-garlic hub.
FAQ
Does clove size matter?
Yes, and two unrelated traditions agree on it. The trial sorted cloves to identical size specifically because clove size carries through to bulb size 1, and the Chinese grower picks the largest cloves for the bed because "a bigger clove grows a thicker plant," putting the smaller ones in the kitchen instead 4.
If I pull my garlic early as greens, can I plant it closer?
That is exactly what the Chinese plots do — greens and scapes at 5–8 cm, bulbs at 12–15 cm 2. Tight spacing at the young stage also showed no penalty in the trial 1.
Can I plant garlic bought at the supermarket?
Two of our sources are dedicated to that question; this article is about depth and spacing, so we are not summarising their results here.
